Cycle of conferences to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the periodic table by Dmitri Mendeleev

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) proclaimed 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT 2019), coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the brilliant discovery by the chemist Dmitri Mendeleev of the periodic system in 1869.

This commemoration will bring together, all over the world, protagonists of very diverse branches of society, to promote and expose throughout the year the importance of the periodic table of the elements and applications that it has had, has and will have in our society.

The Catalan Chemistry Society, a subsidiary of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans and a full member of the European Union of Chemistry Societies (EuChemS), took the initiative to coordinate the organization of the commemorative acts of the  Any Internacional de la Taula Periòdica a Catalunya.

The Delegation of the CSIC in Catalonia offered to host a series of lectures given by relevant personalities of our environment and specialists in topics related to chemical elements. The aim of the cycle is to give more diffusion to the importance of the celebration and at the same time to highlight the decisive influence of chemistry in our life, as well as to expose in a critical way the challenges in front of which chemistry itself can be key to the future development of our society.

The coordination of the cycle of conferences corresponds to Dr Àngel Messeguer of the Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC - CSIC) and Dr Lluís Calvo of the Milà i Fontanals Institute (IMF - CSIC, Residència d'Investigadors).

The scheduled conferences are:

  • 8th April - 150 anys d'un descobriment scientfic cabdal: the periodical taula by Pilar González Duarte, member of the IEC and retired professor of the Chemistry Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB)
  • 15th April - What is the temps amb la taula periòdica? per Joan O. Grimalt, Research Professor at the CSIC
  • 6th May - Hidrogen: the chemical element més simple ens farà lliures? by Jordi Llorca Piqué, Professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC)
  • 13th May - The descobriment de l'oxygen and els nous conceptes d'element and chemical compost: punts clau of the chemical revolution of the eighteenth century by Aureli Caamaño Ros, professor of Physics and Chemistry of secondary
  • 27th May - The carboni: from the origin of life to nano-science by Gerard Tobias Rossell, scientific researcher at the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC)
  • 3rd June - The periodical taula com a icona cultural by Santiago Álvarez Reverter, Department of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, Institut de Química Teòrica i Computacional i Universitat de Barcelona (UA)
  • 17th June - The taula periòdica: Confusions conceptuals i terminològiques by Claudi Mans i Teixidó, retired professor emeritus of Chemical Engineering at the University of Barcelona (UA)

The conferences will be held from April 8 to June 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Residence of Researchers, CSIC-Generalitat de Catalunya in C. Hospital, 64 in Barcelona.
